The Polish Lowland Sheepdog, also known as Polski Owczarek Nizinny or PON, is a medium-sized dog breed that originated in Poland. The breed was developed in the 16th century for herding and protecting sheep. Today, the PON is still used as a working dog but has become increasingly popular as a companion.
PONs stand between 17 and 20 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 30 and 60 pounds. They have thick, shaggy coats that come in shades of gray, white, black with gray markings, or brown with white markings. Their eyes are dark and oval-shaped. PONs have high-set ears that hang down close to their heads when relaxed but perk up when alert.
PONs are highly intelligent dogs with friendly personalities. They form strong bonds with their owners and are loyal protectors of their family members. They can be wary of strangers initially but will warm up once they determine there’s no threat. PONs have strong herding instincts so they may try to herd other pets or children if not properly trained.
Like all breeds of dogs, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog is prone to certain health issues such as hip dysplasia which can lead to arthritis later on in life if left untreated; progressive retinal atrophy which leads to blindness; skin allergies; ear infections due to hairy ear canals; elbow dysplasia which causes joint pain on elbows causing difficulty walking among others.
Due to its origin from being an active dog used for herding sheep , PONS need plenty of exercise every day . Lack thereof could make it anxious by acting out aggressively towards people or barking excessively especially indoors.. A minimum requirement would be taking them out for one walk per day., preferably done outdoors since this allows your furry friend space off-leash where it can run around and play.
Special Grooming Needs:
The breed’s thick, shaggy coat requires regular grooming to prevent mats from forming which would create an unpleasant situation for the dog if left untaken care of for a long time. Brushing twice or thrice in a week is sufficient to maintain their coats . Ears must be cleaned thoroughly at least once per month.
Early training and socialization are essential components of owning this breed as PONS being highly intelligent dogs get bored easily hence require mental stimulation to stay active.. Positive reinforcement techniques work best on them as they respond well towards reward based methods.
PONs make excellent family pets that do well with children and other animals if properly introduced early. They tend to bond strongly with their owners and strive for your attention; therefore consistent companionship is important lest they become destructive due boredom brought about by separation anxiety.
Though not exactly known worldwide owing to its low popularity status among other breeds ,Polish Lowland Sheepdog has been featured in some movies like “Natural Born Killers” whereby played the role “Dog” which was owned by Juliette Lewis as one half of her character Mallory’s personality..
In conclusion, The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is an energetic, friendly dog that makes a great companion or working animal when raised right! Proper training ,grooming plus daily exercise alongside appropriate healthcare routine would lead into having good relationship between you and your furry friend who’ll always be faithful !
