West Highland White Terrier Description

The West Highland White Terrier is a small dog that features a soft, white coat. It also has a dense undercoat, and they have dark eyes which cast a strong gaze. The ears are small in size, and should always be erect. This dog has the look of a breed that is intelligent and alert. The tail should not be docked, and will generally be 6 inches in length. Despite its size, the West Highland White Terrier has powerful limbs and a scissors bite. This breed originates in Scotland, and was first bred during the 19th century. They were primarily used to kill rats, foxes, and other animals which were considered to be pets. It is now used primarily as a pet, though it is still efficient at killing pests.

Temperament

The West Highland White Terrier is a dog that is simple to train. They are tolerant of strangers, and will function well with children, as long as the children treat it with respect. These dogs will snap if they become annoyed or bothered. They will get along fine with other dogs. Unlike many terriers, they don’t get into a lot of fights with dogs they encounter. They will chase cats, but will generally not have the intention of killing them. This breed enjoys being in the company of others. They make great travel companions, and will dig holes when given the chance.

Health Problems

West Highland Terriers are a healthy breed which does not develop a large number of health problems. They may have skin disorders, liver disease, or problems with their hips. They have long lifespans, and can live longer than 15 years.

Exercise

The West Highland Terrier does not need extreme amounts of exercise. Taking it for an extended walk is generally enough to keep it healthy. These dogs can live in virtually any environment. While they are comfortable in a medium sized yard, they are perfectly happly living in an apartment as well. These dogs are active even inside the home, and can exercise themselves when it is necessary.

Special Grooming Needs

This breed does not shed large amounts of fur, and their coats are easy to maintain. You will simply want to brush it as often as possible. Brushing the coat should be enough to keep it clean, and there is little need to wash these dogs unless it is necessary. The coat will need to be trimmed twice a year.
