West Highland White Terrier Pictures and Information

Welsh Terrier Description

At first glance, the Welsh Terrier closely resemble an Airdale Terrier. It has a bushy coat, and the head is long and flat. The Welsh Terrier also has bushy eyebrows and a muzzle which is square in shape. Their ears are shaped like the letter “V,” and they have small, dark eyes which are shaped like almonds. The nose should be black, and the teeth should be in the form of a scissors bite. It has small, circular feet which could be likened to a cat. The color of the coat should only be tan, grizzle, or black. When Welsh Terriers are first born, they will be completely black. Their tails should be docked. These dogs were first bred in Wales to hunt small game such as badgers, otters, and foxes. It was first displayed in England during the 19th century.

Temperament

The Welsh Terrier is an active dog which is loving an intelligent. It is good with children, and makes excellent family dogs. These dogs love to play, and function well with families that are highly active. These dogs will often be courageous, though they can become timid at times. To solve this problem, Welsh Terriers will need to be properly socialized while they are puppies. Some of these dogs will easily get into fights with other animals, while others will behave well. The Welsh Terrier is much more calm than other terrier breeds. Overall, this dog is excellent for families, and makes a great pet.

Health Problems

Some Welsh Terriers may have skin or eye disorders. They are generally a very healthy breed that can live up to 12 years.

Exercise

The Welsh Terrier is a breed that has excessive amounts of energy. They will always be happy to run and play. This is not a good dog for people who are too busy, though it can get along fine by itself. You will want to spend time with it, and these dogs should be allowed to run free in open areas which are secure. These dogs have a tendency to chase objects, so you will want to be careful when taking them off the leash.

Special Grooming Needs

The coat of the Welsh Terrier will need to be plucked a few times each year. The coat will also need to be consistently groomed each week. If the dog will compete in shows, extensive amounts of constant grooming is required. The Welsh Terrier will only shed small amounts of hair.
