Welsh Corgi (Cardigan) Description

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a dog breed which was first bred in Wales, and it is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. It was primarily bred to be used for herding cattle. It is a short dog which has a long shape. It can be likened to a fox, and is one of two breeds which comes from a class known as Welsh Corgis.  It also has a long tail, and may be black, red, or checkered. Some may have coats which are tan in color as well. The ideal Cardigan Welsh Corgi will have white colored fur on their necks, legs, and chest. The Cardigan is short dog breed, and will stand at a maximum of 12.5 inches. The Cardigan has a medium weight. Males will weigh up to 38 pounds, and the females will weigh no more than 34 pounds.

Temperament

Cardigans make great pets. They were bred short and long so that kicks from cattle would miss them. Cardigans are extremely intelligent, and they are also highly active. While they are loving and loyal to their owners, they also make good guard dogs. The one disadvantage to Cardigans is they may nip people, especially young children. This is a natural habit that comes from their herding background. Because of this, they are not considered to be family dogs. They will tend to be loyal only to their owners. They are suspicious of people they are not familiar with.

Health Problems

The Cardigan has well over 30 documented health issues. While this may seem like a lot, other breeds have more. Cardigans may develop problems with their immune system, and they may also lose their nails due to Onychodystrophy. Cardigans are also likely to develop problems with their pancreas. They can lose weight or suffer from diarrhea.

Exercise

Cardigans are extremely athletic dogs. They have scored well in both sheepdog trials and tests for agility. Because they were bred to be herd dogs, they need lots of exercise and a large amount of space. Owners will want to reserve time to give them the exercise they need. If they become bored, they can be destructive. Owners will want to make sure they have plenty to do. Cardigans are prized for their ability to work and guard property. They like to run and are very active.

Special Grooming Needs

The Cardigan has a coat which is cleaned and designed for a wide variety of weather conditions. The coat should be brushed once a week to take off dead hair. Cardigans will shed their coats two times a year.
