Tibetan Mastiff Pictures and Information

Tibetan Mastiff Description

The Tibetan Mastiff is a very large dog which is strong and impressive to look at. It has a wide head with a coat which is thick and medium in length. It has a wide muzzle , and the nose will be large and  black in color.  The ears of this breed will be shaped like the letter “V.” The Teeth of the Tibetan Mastiff are in the form of a scissors bite. The ears should always hang down, and it has a strong jaw and legs. The rear dewclaws should always be taken off. These dogs will have a coat that is usually black in color, though it may be cream, gold, tan, or red as well.

Temperament

Though it is large and territorial, the Tibetan Mastiff is a calm breed. It is loyal to those it cares for, and it is also good with children. However, it is wary with strangers. This dog is known for its courage, and can sometimes be stubborn. However, it will generally go to great lengths to please its owner. Owners should watch these dogs when they are brought into contact with animals they are not familiar with. They can get along with other animals as long as they have been properly socialized. The Tibetan Mastiff is an excellent guard dog.

Health Problems

The Tibetan Mastiff is known for developing a number of health problems. Some of these are hip dysplasia, thyroid issues, and a rare genetic disorder which is called CIDN, or Canine Inherited Demyelinative Neuropathy. This condition will typically be seen in puppies, and they will generally not live longer than four months. These dogs have a maximum lifespan of 15 years.

Exercise

The Tibetan Mastiff is too large to live in most apartments and houses. It needs a large area to move around in. These dogs like to dig holes, and will attempt to dig their way out of any area they are enclosed in. While owners will want to walk these dogs on a regular basis, they do not need large amounts of exercise. These dogs should not run a lot because their large weight places a lot of stress on their joints. The Tibetan Mastiff only needs a moderate amount of exercise.

Special Grooming Needs

This breed has coats which will need to be brushed consistently. The coat will become dense during the winter months, and more care will be required during this time. These dogs will shed two times a year, and owners will need to reserve 30 minutes each day for grooming the dog.
