The breed is a descendent of many different breeds such as the Beagle, the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Manchester Terrier, The Whippet, the Italian Greyhound, and the English Terrier. These dogs were brought by English miners to the United States and mix breeding created the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier. The common name for these, short legged, small, rat hunting dogs were “rat terriers”. The Teddy Roosevelt was named such after Theodore Roosevelt as it was said he owned many while in office. Today, the breed is still used for hunting but also for companionship. They are considered a rare breed. TemperamentThe Teddy Roosevelt Terrier has a very even temperament. They are energetic and alert. They have a very curious nature and are highly intelligent. They are protective of themselves and their family but not known to be aggressive. They are bold and tenancious. They are breed for hunting and cannot be broken of this urge. They are a wonderful pet for children. They get along well with dogs smaller or the same size as them but may feel threatened by large dogs. Health ProblemsThere are no known health problems that directly affect this breed. They can suffer from allergies. They are far healthier than many smaller breeds and seem to “bounce back” quickly when they are ill. Often times a Teddy Roosevelt Terrier will not show any real symptoms when they become ill because they are so strong and determined to preform. ExerciseA Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is very energetic. They benefit greatly from walks and do surprisingly well with leash training. They do very well indoors but do need outdoor play as well. Their hunter instincts are very strong so they will chase and kill rodents. It is important that they have many toys to play with. Special Grooming NeedsThe Teddy Roosevelt Terrier requires little grooming. Their nails tend to grow fast, and should be clipped often. They require almost no brushing. They can be bathed only when needed. Since they do tend to enjoy rolling in the dirt it is important that they are bathed after doing so.
