The lips of this breed must close firmly. The ears should sit high on the head, and they should be small and erect. The eyes of these dogs should have an oval shape, and they must have a dark brown color. The body should be compact, and the chest should be wide. The acceptable coat colors for this breed are various shades of gray. The Swedish Elkhound is a very old breed that has existed since antiquity. It was used to hunt bears and other large game, and it would guard cattle as well. It was not officially recognized until the 1950s, and it is still not common outside of Sweden. They can hunt both large and small game. Health ProblemsThis is a healthy breed that does not suffer from a sizeable number of health problems. Any health problems that are developed by the Swedish Elkhound may be common with all dogs. This breed may have a maximum life expectancy of 13 years. ExerciseThis is not a good breed for people who live in urban areas. These are active dogs that need large amounts of space to move around in. The Swedish Elkhound will do best in either a suburban or preferably rural area. Special Grooming NeedsThis breed has an extensive coat that may need large amounts of grooming. Owners will want to brush or comb the coat on a daily basis, and any mats or tangles that become present in the coat should be removed. These dogs should only be given a bath when it is needed.
