Staffordshire Bull Terrier Description

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a powerful dog that has a well defined body. It has a wide head with powerful jaws, and the muzzle is short. These dogs have prominent stop, and their eyes have a circular shape which should be brown in color. The nose of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier must be black, and the teeth must showcase a scissors bite. The ears should be shaped like roses, and the neck should be powerful and short. Owners will want to make sure the back dewclaws are taken off. These dogs have a coat that is short or smooth. The acceptable coat colors for this breed fawn, black, blue, and brindle, and white patches may also be present as well.

As the name suggests, these dogs were first bred in Staffordshire, England. They are a combination of Bulldogs and Terriers. During the 19th century, these dogs were frequently used in the sport of bull baiting. As this sport lost its popularity, the popularity of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier also declined. However, the dog became popular in the US during the 1930s.

Temperament

These dogs are known for being brave and obedient. Unlike many members of the Terrier family, these dogs are sociable with everyone. The breed is not known for being suspicious of strangers, but each dog may vary. These dogs are great with children, but are quick to get into fights with other dogs. While the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is an intelligent dog, it can be strong willed. Owners will want to make sure these dogs are consistently trained. The puppies love to chew on things, so owners will want to get them toys that are safe.

Health Problems

Some of the conditions that are common with this breed include cataracts, eye problems, and hip dysplasia. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a maximum life expectancy of 16 years.

Exercise

These dogs have extensive amounts of endurance, and owners will want to exercise them as much as possible. It is important to make sure they are not unleashed in public. While they can live in apartments without a problem, owners will want to make sure they are taken for long walks consistently. It is not necessary for them to have a yard.

Special Grooming Needs

This breed comes with smooth, short coat that is easy to maintain. Owners will want to make sure they use a strong brush, and the dog should not be bathed unless it is necessary. When the coat is rubbed with a towel, it will produce an impressive shine.
