They are happiest when they are treated as companions instead of pets. While these dogs are serious while they work, they can be playful when it is appropriate. They will never become problematic unless they are ignored by those that own them. The Spinone Italiano will be gentle with children, but they will want to show it respect. While it is a patient dog, it should not be treated roughly. This breed will get along with other animals and pets. Health ProblemsThere is not much information available about the health of this breed. Because of its size, it is likely that the Spinone Italiano suffers from hip dysplasia. They may also suffer from bloat and Cerebellar Ataxia, a disorder which will affect the brain and gait. This breed has a maximum life expectancy of 12 years. ExerciseThese dogs will only need to get moderate amounts of exercise. They are excellent for those who like to jog, but it is not a dog that needs excessive amounts of exercise. This is also not a good breed for people who live in apartments. They should be placed in a large yard, and owners will want to make sure the fence is higher than normal, as this dog can jump over fences that are too small. In addition to this, the Spinone Italiano is a digger, so owners will want to make sure the fence extends below the ground. Special Grooming NeedsThe coat of these dogs will need to be stripped. Dead hair should be removed, and it will need to be brushed each week. It should not need to be given a lot of baths, as this dog is known for grooming itself.
