Shikoku Description

The Shikoku is a breed of dog that originates from the Japanese Island of Shikoku, and has a similar look as the Shiba Inu. The Shikoku was specifically breed for the purpose of hunting, and it has been successfully used to hunt animals such as deer or boar. This dog is well known in the Kochi Prefecture, and it is very likely that it may have been first bred in this region as well. These dogs should stand at a maximum height of 21 inches, and the acceptable coat colors for this breed are white, black, or red. The body should be square in shape, and the head should have the shape of a wedge. The ears should be triangular in shape, and they should stand erect on the head. The tailed should be held high in a sickle shaped curve. It should be noted that there are three variations of this dog. The most popular is the Hongawa.

Temperament

While these dogs are cheerful and energetic while they are outside, they are calm and nearly silent when they are at home. The Shikoku is praised for its intelligence and the ability to learn things quickly. Because of this, many owners find that these dogs are easy to train. It is not as strong willed as the Shiba Inu or Akita, but this may not be the ideal dog for everyone. They are loving and affectionate to those that care for them.

Health Problems

The Shikoku is a healthy breed that does not have any known healthy problems. Any disorders it may develop are common with other dogs. This breed may have a maximum life expectancy of 15 to 16 years.

Exercise

The Shikoku is a hardy breed that was bred to move through mountains and other difficult terrain. They have large amounts of agility, and owners will want to give them excessive amounts of exercise. While these dogs are great for people who are physically active, they are not good for people who are not physically active. While these dogs can live indoors, owners will want to make sure they are given a sufficient amount of exercise.

Special Grooming Needs

The Shikoku has a coat that is simple to groom. Owners will simply want to use a firm brush or comb on a consistent basis, and the ears should be monitored for ticks or other things that can cause them to become infected. These dogs should only be given a bath when they need it, and there shedding patterns are not known.
