Shar Pei Pictures and Information

Shar Pei Description

The Shar Pei is a Chinese dog breed that has extensive wrinkles on its head. The breed is broken down into three variations, and each will have its own distinctive coat texture. The three coat textures that may be found with the Shar Pei are bear coat, horse coat, and brush coat. The Shar Pei is a popular dog that is well known outside of China. It has an unusual appearance with a friendly expression on its face. Any coat color is acceptable for this breed as long as it is a solid color. However, sable is the most common. The tail of this breed should always be held in a curve. The head should be wide, and while the puppies are born with a large number of wrinkles, most of them are gone by the time they become mature.

Temperament

The Shar Pei is a reliable dog that shows a large amount of affection to those that care for it. It is intelligent, and will not blindly follow any command that is given to it by its owner. While these dogs can be playful, they can also display signs of dominance. While these dogs are loving to their masters, they may also be friendly to strangers, and are not good guard dogs. These dogs will get along with both children and other pets as long as it has been properly socialized. The Shar Pei makes a great watchdog, and is quick to warn its owner of danger.

Health Problems

Some ailments that may be found in the Shar Pei are kidney problems and skin problems. Overall, they are a healthy breed, and will have a maximum life expectancy of 10 years.

Exercise

These dogs need extensive amounts of exercise. Owners will want to take them for extended walks, and they should be allowed to run free in a safe area. However, it is important for owners to make sure these dogs are not released around strange dogs, as they will have a tendency to get in fights with them. These dogs can live in apartments if they are given enough exercise, and they do not need to have a yard.

Special Grooming Needs

Owners will want to brush the coat of the Shar Pei on a consistent basis. However, the coat should never be cut, as these dogs do not have an undercoat. Unlike most dogs, the Shar Pei should be given a bath each week, and this will allow the dead fur to be removed. These dogs are not hypoallergenic, and some people may be allergic to them.
