Schipperke Pictures and Information

Schipperke Description

The Schipperke is a small dog that does not have a tail. It has a dense double coat, and the ears are shaped like triangles, and they should always be erect. While the acceptable coat color for this breed is black, some countries will accept tan or fawn as well. The body of the Schipperke should be short, and it must have the shape of a square. These dogs have wide chests, and their head has the shape of a wedge, and will resemble a fox. The Schipperke will have a sharp muzzle, and the eyes must have an oval shape with a dark brown color. While some of these dogs may be born with a tail, the will almost always be docked.

Temperament

Due to their size, the Schipperke is fast and active. It has the disposition of a large dog. It can be protective, and these dogs are known for their tempers. The Schipperke has a personality that displays confidence. While they are great with children, they will be cautious of people they are not familiar with. They will create a powerful bond with those that care for them. These dogs are brave, and will fight hard to protect themselves or their owners. At the same time, the Schipperke is good with dogs, cats, and other pets. While they may be stubborn, consistent training will allow them to break these bad habits.

Health Problems

The Schipperke is a dog breed that suffers from a large number of health problems. Some of these include hip dysplasia, epilepsy, cataracts, PRA, and a new disorder that is called MPS 111B. It is also important for owners to make sure this dog is not fed more food than it needs. The Schipperke has an average life expectancy of 15 years, but some have been known to live longer.

Exercise

These dogs are highly energetic, and it may sometimes appear as if they have unlimited amounts of energy. Owners will want to make sure these dogs are given excessive amounts of exercise. They can exercise inside the home, and don’t need to have their own yard. At the same time, they will not scoff at being taken on long walks. The Schipperke is great for apartment dwellers.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs are independent, and can groom themselves. Owners will want to make sure the coat is brushed or combed consistently. The Schipperke can shed extensive amounts of fur within a short period of time.
