Samoyed Pictures and Information

Samoyed Description

The Samoyed has a well defined body that shows its strength. It has a impressive coat which will either be biscuit, white, yellow, or cream in color. It has a head which has the shape of a wedge, and the nose should either be black or brown. The Samoyed has powerful jaws and dark eyes. The ears should be medium in size, and should always point upward. These dogs have long tails which are furry, and their legs are muscular. The Samoyed has a distinctive coat which is dense, and is designed to shield it from extreme cold. This breed originates in Siberia, and was used by group of people who call themselves the Samoyeds. These dogs were used for many years to pull sleds, and it is likely they were first bred by this group. The dog was first brought to England during the 19th century, and was given the name of the people who used it.

When this dog is well cared for, it can display a spectacular look. It is prominently featured in dog shows around the world.

Temperament

The Samoyed is a gentle breed. It is devoted to those that care for it, and they will create a strong bond with a single person, though they are kind to most people they meet. These dogs love to play, and have cheerful personalities. The Samoyed is not a good guard dog, and should not even be used as a watch dog. The reason for this is because it will be friendly to intruders. It will bark, and this could act as an alarm to owners.  These dogs love children, and are very intelligent, though they are difficult to train.

Health Problems

The Samoyed may develop hip dysplasia and diabetes. The males are prone to getting PRA, a condition which effects their eyes. These dogs may also have skin problems. Samoyeds have long lifespans, and may live up to 15 years.

Exercise

These dogs need moderate amounts of exercise. Owners don’t want to push them to the extreme, especially during the summer months. These dogs have coats which are designed to protect them from cold weather, and it will trap any heat that is generated by physical activities.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs need large amounts of grooming. They shed large amounts of fur, and their coats will need to be brushed on a daily basis. However, the coat will maintain its color even when the dog is not regularly bathed.
