Saluki Pictures and InformationSaluki DescriptionThe Saluki is a breed which has a very graceful appearance. They will showcase an interesting gait when they run at high speeds, as all of their legs appear to be in the air simultaneously. It has a body which could be compared to a greyhound. It is long and slender, and features a smooth coat which is coarse. The coat should have the colors of either fawn, tan, white, cream, or black. This dog has traditionally been used by the Bedouin tribes, who are likely responsible for breeding it. The Saluki has a head which is well defined, and the ears are long and should hang to the sides of its head. The eyes for this breed sould either be light or dark brown. The Saluki has fur between its toes so that it can move about with ease on tough surfaces. TemperamentThe Saluki is a patient dog which can be loving. They will have a tendency to become attached to a single individual, and are good with mature children. This dog doesn’t like to be treated roughly, and may not work well with young children. Owners will want to affectionately train this dog. They do not respond well to harsh training methods. Even when they are trained, they can be strong willed and will not always follow commands. The Saluki enjoys being around others dogs that are the same breed. While they will not easily attack people, they will hunt animals that are not dogs. They will need to be trained in order to weaken this instinct. Health ProblemsThis breed is susceptible to developing cancer, and they may also develop eye problems. Owners will need to be cautious when taking them out in the sun, as they can get sunburn. The Saluki has a maximum life expectancy of 12 years. ExerciseThe Saluki is a slender dog which is naturally agile and fast. Because of this, they need lots of exercise. While they enjoy running, they must only be allowed to move about in a secure area, as many have been killed when they were allowed to move about by themselves. This dog should always be kept on a leash unless they are in an area where there are no potential dangers. These dogs run fast, and can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Special Grooming NeedsThe Saluki is free of odors, and is easy to groom. Their coats should be brushed and combed whenever it is needed.
