Saarlooswolfhond Pictures and InformationSaarlooswolfhond DescriptionThe Saarlooswolfhond is a breed which has a strongly built neck. It has a head which is somewhat broad, and it also has ears which resemble those of a German Shepherd. The nose is dark in color, and the muzzle will taper. It has extended legs with an extensive coat, and it should be gray or brown in color. These dogs were first bred in 1921 by Leendert Saarloos, and his goal was to create a variation of the German Shepherd that was easier to train. Though he failed a number of times, Saarloos was eventually successful. However, these dogs are not an improvement over the German Shepherd when it comes to training, and has not performed well as police dogs. Despite this, the Saarlooswolfhond was officially recognized in 1972. The Saarlooswolfhond is medium to large in size. It will weigh up to 90 pounds, and will stand at a maximum height of 29.5 inches. This dog has an appearance which strongly resembles a wolf, and it also has some of the attributes found in German Shepherds. TemperamentThese dogs have a number of characteristics that can be seen in wolves. They are shy around strangers, but enjoy being in packs. They also enjoy moving around in wide open spaces. They are independent, and will have problems following orders that are given to them. This is one of the reasons why many Saarlooswolfhonds have failed as police dogs. They need a good leader who will take command of them. They are not good with children, and will not enjoy being placed in a kennel atmosphere. These dogs hate being confined to enclosed spaces. Owners must train the dog firmly, and it should always recognize its owner as being the leader. Health ProblemsThis breed is prone to developing a number of conditions, and some of these are hip dysplasia and spondylosis. The Saarlooswolfhond has a maximum life expectancy of 12 years. ExerciseThese dogs need large amounts of exercise, and are not good for people who live in aparments. If they are given a large amount of space, they can exercise themselves without the supervision of their owners. Special Grooming NeedsThe Saarlooswolfhond has a coat which can allow it to adopt to various weather conditions. The rough coat will need to be consistently cared for. It should be brushed or combed each day. It shouldn’t be bathed too much, as this will take away important oil that it retains in its skin.
