Rhodesian Ridgeback Description

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a breed which is big and muscular. It gets its name from the ridge it has which runs along its back, and is formed by fur. The coat is short and smooth, and should either be dark or light wheaten. This dog may also have white marks on the front of the chest. It has a long head with a flat skull, and both the muzzle and jaw is exceptionally powerful. The teeth are well defined, and it has round eyes which display the look of intelligence. The nose color should only be black or brown in color. The tail should be tapered, and may curve up. This breed originates in South Africa.

Temperament

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a hound which is known for its excellent hunting abilties. While it is fierce while hunting, it is calm and patient in the presence of its family. This dog is quick to obey commands that are given to it by those that care for it. These dogs generally do not behave well with children, because they don’t like to be bothered or handled in a rough manner. They are smart dogs that can be cunning when necessary, and are also independent.

These dogs need lots of training, and should be socialized with people or other dogs if masters want them to behave. While this breed is good at being watch dogs, they are not efficient guard dogs.

Health Problems

These dogs have few genetic health problems. but are known to suffer from cataracts, elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia. The Rhodesian Ridgeback has a maximum life expectancy of about 12 years.

Exercise

These dogs have extreme amounts of endurance, so will require an active owner to keep up. They are great for owners who enjoy exercising, and can adapt to any fitness routine. While these dogs can live in an apartments, it will be the responsibility of the owner to make sure they get the exercise they need.

The ideal place to put a Rhodesian Ridgeback is a big yard where they have plenty of room to run around. The enhanced stamina of these dogs makes them excellent companions for people who are physically fit.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs have smooth coats that are simple to care for. They don’t need to be brushed on a daily basis, and should only be groomed when it is needed. These dogs shed a standard amount of fur.
