Redbone Coonhound Description

The Redbone Coonhound is a beautiful dog which is powerful and energetic. It has a clean body, and the ears are long and will hang to the sides of its head. These dogs should always hold their tails upright. They have paws that could be likened to cats, and their skin should be red. The Redbone Coonhound should have a gleaming coat which is smooth and flat. Coat colors which are acceptable for this breed include red with a touch of white. The Redbone Coonhound is a dog which originates in the southern part of the United States. It was bred primarily by hunters living in the states of Georgia and Tennessee.

Their goal was to create a hound that was faster and had a better sense of smell than other coonhounds. These dogs are direct descendants of the Foxhounds. There is also some evidence that is is mixed with Bloodhound as well. The breeding efforts of these hunters produced a dog which was superior to other coonhounds in virtually every way.

Coonhounds were bred to hunt, and they can easily be trained to follow scents. The Coonhound will work hard to gain the respect of its master, and can work on a wide variety of different terrain under various weather conditions. Because of this, these dogs are especially suited to hunters. While these dogs can be kept inside, but this has a tendancy to make the dog lazy As they have a tendancy to put on weight, . they are best suited living in a house with  a large yard. Their coats can allow them to live outside all seasons of the year.

Health Problems

The Redbone Coonhound is a healthy breed, and does not have any genetic health problems. It has a maximum lifespan of about 12 years.

Exercise

As these dogs were bred to be hunters, they need excessive amounts of exercise. However, owners will want to supervise them, because they will quickly run away to hunt if they are let loose. If these dogs are kept in a large yard, they can exercise without the supervision of their owner.

Special Grooming Needs

The Redbone Coonhound breed does not need to have their coats brushed on a consistent basis. They are below average when it comes to shedding fur.
