Pointer Dog Pictures and Information

Pointer Dog Description

The Pointer is an English Breed which dates back to the 16th century. It is both powerful and graceful, and it has a well proportioned frame which is muscular. The nose sits slightly above the muzzle, and it has eyes which are either hazel or brown in color. It has a long, straight tail which is not docked. It has feet which have an oval shape. It also has a coat which is short and shiny, it will generally be black, orange, white, or lemon. They may also have combination of these three colors. The ideal Pointer will have a nose color which is identical to the coat.

The true origin of the Pointer is not known. Experts believe it was bred from a large number of different breeds. The contemporary Pointer has been in existence for about 80 years. The dog gets its name from the stance it will make when it has located prey. The direction that the dog is facing will tell hunters where prey is hidden. The Pointer became extremely popular during the 17th century.

Temperament

The Pointer has a lot of energy, and is always ready to move. They are devoted to their owners,  and are also good with children. While the Pointer has a lot of strength and endurance, it is calm. These dogs have a tendency to become timid, and should be trained why they are puppies. They are alert and will bark if their hear noises which are out of the ordinary, and this makes them good watchdogs. These dogs are natural hunters, and they may not be good pets for certain individuals. These dogs tend to be self reliant, and are generally not aggressive towards other dogs they encounter.

Health Problems

The primary diseases which are found with this breed are thyroid and skin problems. Dwarfism is another condition which effects Pointers. They have a maximum life span of about 14 years.

Exercise

Pointers have traditionally been used as hunting dogs, and need lots of exercise. They are not the type of dogs that needs to be kept indoors. Owners will want to have a large amount of space for them. These dogs should not be purchased by owners who don’t have time to spend with them.

Special Grooming Needs

Because Pointers have smooth coats, they are quite simple to groom. You will just want to brush them on a regular basis, and they can be given baths whenever it is needed. The dog should be dried carefully to stop them from getting the chills. Pointers shed standard amounts of fur.
