The Plott Hound is a breed which is moderate in size. Their bodies are muscular, and their coats are short, smooth, and shiny. While the ideal coat color is brindle, some of these dogs may also have coats which are buckskin or blue. When the Plott Hound is active, it will hold its tail high. This breed has long ears which are sizeable, and the back legs are powerful and well defined. It is the back legs that give this dog a large amount of power and agility. In addition to this, the Plott Hound has webbed toes, and this allows it to excel at swimming.

Temperament

The Plott Hound is an excellent pet. It is reliable and intelligent, and it can learn things within a short period of time. It enjoys being around children, and this makes it a great dog for families. However, this breed was developed to hunt, and is proficient at this task. They will display large amounts of bravery during the hunt, and it will engage a large boar or bear. The Plott Hound has a voice which is distinct from other hounds. It must be socialized while it is a puppy, and these dogs are that they are prone to drooling.

Health Problems

This breed enjoys eating extensive amounts of food. Unfortunately, this could lead to it developing gastric torsion, which can be dangerous. These dogs should never be exercised right after they’ve finished eating a sizeable meal. Other than this, the Plott Hound is a healthy breed. They have a maximum life expectancy of 14 years.

Exercise

It is important for owners to make sure these dogs are given large amounts of exercise. They were bred to hunt, and have large amounts of energy that must be harnessed. While owners will want to let them run freely, this should only be done in a safe area. These dogs will run off in the direction of a scent, and it will be hard for you to catch them. These dogs are not good for apartment dwellers, and must have a large amount of space.

Special Grooming Needs

The Plott Hound has a coat that is simple to care for. Owners will want to make sure dead hair is taken off the coat, and the ears should be checked for signs of infection. If they have just come back from a hunt, owners will want to check the nails to make sure they aren’t damaged.
