Pharoah Hound Description

The Pharoah Hound is a slender dog which is both elegant and athletic. They are sighthounds, and will have heads which are shaped like wedges. Both the muzzle and head should have an extended length, and the eyes should be small and amber in color. The Pharoah Hound has large ears that should stand upright. The nose should be tan in color, and it should should also have a bit of pink. The teeth of these dogs should form a scissors bite, and their jaws are strong. The tail of the Pharoah Hound could be likened to a whip, and it will taper near the tip. The coat is short and shiny, and will either be red or tan in color, and it may also have white patches.

As the name implies, the Pharoah Hound originates in Egypt, and was first bred there thousands of years ago. Many experts agree that it is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. This dog was used by the Egyptians to hunt small animals, and it has been mentioned in a number of ancient Egyptian manuscripts.

Owners may also allow it to run free in an open area as long as it is a secure location. These dogs can live in apartments if they are given sufficient amounts of exercise, but they will perform best in a large yard.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs have coats that can easily be cared for. Owners will want to remove dead hair with a brush made out of rubber, and the Pharoah Hound should only be bathed when it is needed. This dogs do not have odors, and they will shed a standard amount of fur.
