Peruvian Hairless Dog Pictures and Information

Peruvian Hairless Dog Description

The Peruvian Hairless Dog is a breed that originates from South America. It has existed in this region since antiquity, and it is believed to have been developed by the Inca. As the name implies, these dogs do not have coats, and this is the most important thing that is measured in dog shows. Though there is a version of this dog that does have a full coat, it is not recognized by any dog shows. The acceptable skin colors for this breed are chocolate, grey, copper, or dark brown. The eye colors of these dogs should be directly connected to the color of their skin. This dog comes in the Miniature, Medium, and Large variety. While it is commonly believed that these dogs were first bred by the Inca, there is also evidence that this breed existed before the rise of the Inca civilization.

Temperament

This breed is exceptionally intelligent and independent. Their intelligence allows them to be trained easily, and they are excellent with children. While the Peruvian Hairless Dog can be protective, it is a sociable dog that will get along with other dogs. In fact, these dogs don’t like being alone, unless they are properly trained. Their elegant body shape allows them to run fast, and they should only be purchased by owners who are experienced with handling and training dogs.

Health Problems

These dogs may lack more teeth than other dogs, and they may also develop skin problems. Other than this, the Peruvian Hairless Dog is a healthy breed. They may have a maximum life expectancy of 13 years.

Exercise

The Peruvian Hairless Dog will need standard amounts of exercise. Owners will want to take it for extended walks on a consistent basis, and these dogs should be allowed to run free in an enclose area. They are great dogs for owners who are physically active. They may function well in apartments, but it will be the responsibility of the owners to make sure they are given the necessary amount of exercise.

Special Grooming Needs

There is little that needs to be done in the ways of grooming, because these dogs do not have coats. However, it is important for the owners to care for the skin of the dog. It should be treated so that skin disorders are avoided, and using a chamois on the skin will allow it to display a beautiful shine. The Peruvian Hairless Dog will shed no fur, and is an excellent dog for people who have allergies.
