Pembroke Welsh Corgi Pictures and Information

Pembroke Welsh Corgi Description

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a dog breed that originates in Wales. It was bred for the purpose of herding, and it is proficient at this task. Many experts believe that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a descendant of dogs that were used by the Vikings. These dogs are quite small, and should not stand taller than 12 inches. There maximum weight should be 30 pounds. The acceptable coat colors for the Pembroke Welsh Corgi are black, tan, fawn, red, and sable. White marks are acceptable as well. The docking of the tail is also desirable with this breed as well. However, bob tails are desired in countries where docking is illegal.

Country of Origin

United Kingdom

Temperament

Like many dogs that were bred to herd, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a number of desirable characteristics. It is energetic, intelligent, and alert. While many people may think that the short legs of these dogs cause problems for them, they can still jump much higher than other dogs. In addition to this, they can run exceptionally fast. These dogs have cheerful dispositions, and they will work hard to please those that care for them. Because of their intelligence, this breed is simple to train, and owners can train them best by giving them praise for things they have accomplished.

Health Problems

One problem that is commonly seen in this breed is arthritis. In addition to this, if they are fed more than the necessary amount of food, they can gain too much weight within a short period of time. They should also not be allowed to jump around too much, as they could damage their small legs. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a maximum life expectancy of fourteen years.

Exercise

Because of their size, many owners make the mistake of thinking the Pembroke Welsh Corgi does not need large amounts of exercise. While this may be true for most dogs that fall under the Toy category, this is not the case for the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Owners will need to give these dogs a minimum of 1 hour worth of exercise each day. They can live in apartments or small homes, but owners will have to take care of the exercise needs.

Special Grooming Needs

These breed only need standard amounts of grooming. However, owners will want to remove any mats or tangles that may appear. These dogs should only be given a bath when it is necessary, and owners will want to use a firm brush or comb on a regular basis.
