Patterdale Terrier Pictures and InformationPatterdale Terrier DescriptionThe Patterdale Terrier is often called the Black Fell Terrier. They are a small breed of dog weighing between 11-13 pounds. They average in height at 12 inches. They have short coarse hair, broken coats, or wire coats. Their coats are red, brown, black and tan, or solid black. They have widely spaced ears that hang in v-shaped folds. Their bodies are thicker than most terriers. They resemble Bull Terriers. The breed originated in England and remain popular there. They are virtually unknown outside of Great Britain. Areas where Patterdale Terriers are most popular are Great Britain’s Lake District and Yorkshire. The breed was named after a village in Cumbria. They were bred to hunt rats, rabbits, and fox. They are still used today as hunters. The first Patterdale Terrier was brought to the United States in 1978.

They are not agressive towards people but are not overly affectionate either. They are born leaders and will not be happy in situations where they cannot exercise this ability. They are far calmer than most terriers, not the slightest bit hyper. They are a very tough breed and fiercely independent. Keeping a Patterdale Terrier at home can prove a difficult task because they are excellent diggers. They can be very hard to train. They must never be let around non-canine pets because of their hunting instincts. Health ProblemsTheir are no known health problems that specifically target the Patterdale Terrier. Since they are hunters and love the outdoors it is an absolute necessity, as is recommended with all breeds, that they recieve a rabies vaccination. ExerciseThe Patterdale Terrier is realitively inactive indoors but fully makes up for that when outdoors. They must have a great deal of exercise. This breed is bred to hunt and will not be happy unless they do so and do so often. Patterdale Terriers, in general, do not take well to leash training. They do not adapt well to areas that are not rural or do not have plenty have room for them to run. It is important that you do not run free if non-canine animals are present in the area and you are not hunting. Special Grooming NeedsLittle to no grooming is required for a Patterdale Terrier. They do tend to enjoy getting dirty so a bath from time to time is necessary.
