Papillon Pictures and Information

Papillon Description

The Papillon may also be known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, and is a small breed which has a long tail which it will curl over its back. This dog has a lavish coat which will always have a white base color, though it may have patches which are different colors. The only color that is not ideal for the patches is liver. It has ears which may stand up, or they may hang down. These dogs have muzzles which are short and somewhat sharp. The Papillon has very distinctive ears which are shaped like the wings of a butterfly. These dogs are an old breed which has existed in Europe for well over 600 years. It has been featured in a number of 13th century paintings.

Temperament

The Papillon is an intelligent breed that is cheerful. It is playful and charming, but is not as energetic as many small breeds. It is a silent dog which barks very little. While it will be happy living indoors, it enjoys being taken outside as well. The Papillon may not behave well with strangers, though it can be trained to perform a number of different tasks. One disadvantage of this breed is that it can be hard to housebreak. These breed may not behave well with young children, and should only be surrounded by older children that are more mature. They will behave with other pets as long as they have been properly socialized.

Health Problems

These dogs may have problems with their kneecaps, and they will need to be treated for this. Another condition that is common to this breed is called fontanel and it is a small opening which may be present at the zenith of their skulls. While it may close over time, owners will want to treat the dog if it doesn’t. Despite these ailments, Papillons can live as long as 16 years.

Exercise

These are small dogs that enjoy running outside, but do not need large amounts of exercise. Taking them on walks a few times each week is generally all that is need to keep them physically fit.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs have beautiful coats which need to be cared for if they are to maintain their looks. The coat will need to be brushed or combed each day. These dogs carry no odors, and won’t need to be bathed often.  The nails should be kept short and the teeth should be cleaned on a consistent basis.

They shed standard amounts of fur.
