Norwich Terrier Description

The Norwich Terrier is a small dog that is a member of the Terrier family. It is one of the smallest terriers in the world, and has a short body that is compact. These dogs feature a muzzle that will resemble a fox, and their teeth are large and powerful. The eyes should be dark in color, and the tail should be partly docked. The Norwich Terrier has a coat with a wiry texture, and it should either be tan, wheaten, black, or grizzle in color. Some of these dogs may also have white patches.

Originally, the Norwich Terrier and Norfolk Terrier were classed as one breed (Norwich is a city in the County of Norfolk), but the two breeds were separated during the 1960s. This move was made in England, and was quickly followed by kennel clubs in the US and other countries. The Norwich Terrier is much more sociable than other members of the Terrier family. While it was originally used for hunting, it is now commonly used as a pet. Despite this, the Norwich Terrier can still kill pests.

Country of Origin

United Kingdom

Temperament

Norwich Terriers are loving dogs which are energetic and balanced. While they are simple to train, they will need to be given rules. This is a breed which is friendly with virtually everyone, and they are not good watchdogs or guard dogs. Despite this, the Norwich Terrier is good with children, and makes a fine family dog. These dogs are diggers, and become problematic if they are isolated for extended periods of time. While they are good with other animals, they can be hard to housebreak.

Health Problems

Norwich Terriers are a very healthy breed. They may suffer from back or eye problems, and they have a maximum life expectancy of 15 years.

Exercise

The Norwich Terrier is a dog which was bred for labor. They have lots of energy, and enjoy being able to run and play. However, it is necessary for owners to exercise them each day. They should never be allowed to run off the leash unless they are in a secure area. These dogs are active inside, and can function well in an apartment. It isn’t necessary for them to have yards.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs have shaggy coats that are simple to maintain. Despite this, owners will want to make sure they are brushed or combed each day. Extensive amounts of care will be needed when these dogs begin to shed. They should only be bathed when it is necessary.
