Norfolk Terrier Pictures and Information

Norfolk Terrier Description

The Norfolk Terrier is one of the smallest dogs in the Terrier family. It originated in England, and has a compact body which is strong. It has a muzzle which could be likened to a fox, and it also has dark eyes. The Norfolk Terrier will have a coat that is either black, tan, or red in color. Some of these dogs will have white marks, but this is not common. Norfolk terriers also have pronounced eyebrows and whiskers. The coats of this breed will come in either one of two forms, and this is straight or bristly. They stand at a height of 10 inches and will weigh up to 12 pounds.

Norfolk Terriers were one breed until 1964, when representatives in England made the controversial decision to split them into two breeds. The other version is called the Norwich Terrier. The American Kennel Club also recognizes these dogs as being two separate breeds, with the Norfolk being distinguished by it’s folded ears. Norfolk Terriers have also been used to hunt foxes. While these dogs are mostly used as pets, they are very effective in killing pests. Their small size allows them to get in and out of small places easily.

Temperament

Norfolk Terriers are dogs which are highly active. Despite their small size, they are known for their courage. They can be trained, but they must be given logical rules. Norfolk Terriers are dogs which can get along with virtually anyone, including small children. This makes them good family dogs. However, if they are left outside by themselves, they will begin barking and may also dig holes in the ground. They must constantly be kept busy. Owners will want to purchase toys to keep them occupied, and these dogs should be supervised at all times.

Health Problems

There are no known diseases which are specific to this breed. They have a life span of up to 15 years, and are one of the healthiest breeds in the Terrier family.

Exercise

These dogs enjoy hard work. They have a lot of stamina and endurance, and you will want to exercise them whenever you can. They don’t have to get the consistent exercise that other dog breeds need.

Special Grooming Needs

Norfolk Terriers are easy to groom. They tend to have coats which are furry, and they will need to be brushed each day. Trimming their coat is not generally necessary. These dogs should only be bathed when it is needed. They don’t shed much in comparison to other dogs.
