Newfoundland Pictures and Information

Newfoundland Description

The Newfoundland is a large and strong dog which has a massive head. Despite this, it is elegant, and is a joy to look at. It is also agile, and can move quickly for a dog of its size. The “Newfie” has a small muzzle which is broad. It has ears which are shaped like triangles, and it should also have small eyes which are a darker shade of brown. The nose will almost always be black in color, while some dogs may have brown noses instead. These dogs have webbed feet, and this allows them to swim with ease. The dewclaws on their hind legs should be taken off. They have wavy coats which are designed to deal with large amounts of water. The coat for the Newfoundland will nearly always be black, and may have a bit of white fur.

Country of Origin

Canada

Temperament

The Newfoundland is a breed which has a great temperament. They are brave, loyal, and intelligent, and have some attributes which are almost human. The Newfoundland is patient, and shows a lot of kindness to their masters. This breed can perform well as guard dogs, but they can also function as family dogs as well. They don’t bark excessively, and are good with both children and other animals. These dogs drink lots of water, and enjoy being wet. While they may drool, it is not as excessive as other large dogs.

Health Problems

The size of these dogs makes them susceptible to getting hip dysplasia. Owners will want to avoid feeding them excessive amounts of food.  Like other large breeds, they may also develop sub-aortic stenosis, a condition which effects their hearts. The Newfoundland has an average life expectancy of about 10 years.

Exercise

These are large dogs that will need lots of space to move around in. They can live indoors, but will need to be exercised on a regular basis. They don’t like heat, and owners will want to make sure they have a large amount of water and shade during the summer months. The Newfoundland enjoys being in cold climates.

Special Grooming Needs

There coats will need to be brushed each day. Owners will want to use strong brushes, and the undercoat will shed two times each year. The Newfoundland sheds the most during the spring months. These dogs should not be bathed unless they need it. This breed has natural oils in there coat that will be removed if they are bathed frequently, and this is something owners will want to avoid.
