New Zealand Huntaway Pictures and Information

New Zealand Huntaway Description

The New Zealand Huntaway is a breed that may come in a wide variety of different sizes and colors. While some dogs may be large, others may be small. For many owners, the most important aspect of these dogs is their ability to work rather than their looks. This dog was first bred during the early part of the 20th century. It was bred to herd sheep, and contains the genes of a large number of different breeds. Some of the breeds that compose the Huntaway are the Border Collie, German Shepherd, and the Hound. While some Huntaways will use their voice to guid herds, others will not.

As of this writing, the New Zealand Huntaway is not registered by any kennel clubs. It is primarily used for the purpose it was bred for, and this is a dog which herds sheep. Some of these dogs have been sent to England, and have participated in a number of trials. The New Zealand Huntaway is a medium sized dog. It will stand at a maximum of 24 inches, and it will weigh up to 65 pounds. However, it should be noted that this is the average, and the size of these dogs may vary.

Temperament

The Huntaway is a breed which is friendly, even with strangers. It is quite unique because of its ability to use its voice to guide sheep. They don’t make good guard dogs and should not be used for this purpose. It is also important for owners to train the dog when they should bark and when they shouldn’t bark. The New Zealand Huntaway is an intelligent breed, and is easy to train. These dogs have unusually high levels of intelligence.

Health Problems

These dogs are healthy, and do not suffer from any health conditions which are specific to the breed. The typical New Zealand Huntaway has a life expectancy of about 14 years.

Exercise

Because these dogs were bred to work, they are highly active. Owners will make sure they are given large amounts of exercise, and they should be allowed to run free, as long as it is in a safe area. Owners will also want to make sure they have a large amount of space.

Special Grooming Needs

The coat of these dogs will need to be brushed or combed consistently. Owners will want to use a strong brush. The Huntaway will shed a standard amount of fur.
