New Guinea Singing Dog Description

The New Guinea Singing Dog is a medium sized dog that somewhat resembles a fox. It has a head which is shaped like a wedge, and its eyes have a triangular shape. It has a lavish coat and a bushy tail, and is graceful and fast. The ideal NGSD should never have a coat or whiskers that has been trimmed. The coat will either be tan or black in color, and it may have white patches as well. While the dog should have a few white patches, they should not cover a large percentage of its body. This breed has a muscular body, and their jaws are highly developed. These dogs were first encountered by explorers who came to New Guinea during the 18th century. The island has always been known for its exotic wild life, and these dogs are quite unique.

Country of Origin

New Guinea

Temperament

While the NGSD was originally a wild dog, it has been tamed, and can be kept as pets by humans. In fact, a NGSD which is well trained may even be loving to its owners. The most interesting characteristic of this breed is their ability to alter the pitch of their howl. It is for this reason they are called singing dogs. They don’t bark, but use a combinations of yelps and howls instead. These dogs are agile and alert. They will spend lots of time studying their environment, and they actively use all of their senses. These dogs are very flexible, and can move through small spaces. They have a natural instinct to hunt, and may chase any potential prey they encounter. The NGSD will be aggressive to other dogs.

Health Problems

The NGSD is a healthy breed of dogs, and does not suffer from any specific health problems. They have a very long life expectancy, and some have been known to live as long as 20 years, while the average life span is about 15 years.

Exercise

These dogs need lots of exercise. They were wild dogs before they were tamed, and have a natural instinct to hunt. Owners will want to take them for long walks, and they should also be allowed to run as well. These dogs should have large yards with plenty of space.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs are naturally wild, and their coats have been designed to allow them to thrive in a wide variety of different weather conditions. Because of this, they do not need extensive amounts of grooming.
