Maremma Sheepdog Pictures and Information

Maremma Sheepdog Description

The Maremma Sheepdog is a large breed which has a head that could be likened to a bear. It features powerful jaws, and it has teeth which are in the form of a scissors bite. The nose should always be black in color while it is young, but may become pink or brown as it gets older. It has ears which are small despite its large size, and they will be shaped like the letter “V.” These dogs have medium sized eyes which will showcase an intelligent impression, and their tails should always sit low. The Maremma Sheepdog has an undercoat which is thick, and it will have a small wave pattern.  The coat colors for this dog should be yellow, white, or orange, and it may have white patches as well.

Temperament

While the Maremma Sheepdog is a friendly breed, it is a good guardian as well. It is courageous and loyal, and it makes a great guard dog without the excessive barking that is found with other guard dog breeds. While it is loving to its owner, it can also be independent. This dog will not jump at every command that is given to it. It is intelligent, and will not perform actions that it sees as being pointless. Training this dog requires owners to be patient. While this dog may not behave well with strangers, it will get along well with cats, dogs, and other pets. Even though it is a large dog, the Maremma Sheepdog has an excellent combination of endurance and power.

Health Problems

There are no health problems which are specific to this breed. These dogs can live up to 13 years.

Exercise

This dog is too large to be kept in apartments. Owners will want to have a sizeable yard or space the dog can move around in. It may be possible to keep them inside if you have plenty of space, but it will then be your responsibility to exercise them. At the same time, these dogs have a thick coat which allows them to live outside all seasons of the year. During hot weather, you will want to make sure your Maremma Sheepdog has a lot of shade and water, as it does not function well in hot climates.

Special Grooming Needs

The Maremma Sheepdog has an extensive coat which requires lots of care. The coat should be combed and brushed on a regular basis to rid it of dead hair. These dogs shed excessive amounts of fur.
