Temperament

The Leonberger is an affectionate dog that is calm and loving to those who care for it. Despite their size, these dogs are friendly to virtually everyone. They have extremely high levels of intelligence, and their reliability is very impressive. These dogs can be patient with children, and if they find the children to be annoying, they will simply get up and move to another place. It is these characteristics that make the Leonberger an excellent family dog, and they are rarely seen in other dog breeds. They can be excellent watchdogs, but owners will want to train them.

Health Problems

Because of their size, Leonbergers are susceptible to developing hip dysplasia. In addition to this, they may also develop ailments which effect their bones. Leonbergers don’t have long lifespans, and will have a maximum life expectancy of 9 years.

Exercise

These dogs do not need excessive amounts of exercise. They enjoy swimming, and can be trained to drag sleds. The Leonberger should not be taken for long walks until it is at least 18 months old. These dogs will not function well in apartments. They will at least need to have a large yard to move around in. They enjoy living in places that have cool climates, and will want to be in places where they can receive attention from their masters.

Special Grooming Needs

The Leonberger has a coat which needs to be brushed each week. The ears should be washed regularly, and the teeth will need to be brushed as well. These dogs should only be given baths when they need it. Owners will want to check their coats to make sure there are no mats.
