Lapinporokoira Pictures and InformationLapinporokoira DescriptionThe Lapinporokoira is a medium sized dog that features a double coat. It originates in Finland, and was first bred there in the 16th century. It has traditionally been used as a working dog, and a standard was made for it during the 1960s. The Lapinporokoira has a loose tail which is curled, and it will typically be held next to the thigh. The ideal dog will be no taller than 22 inches, and it should weigh no more than 66 pounds. The Lapinporokoira is also known as the Lapland Reindeer Dog. Outside of Finland, it is not very well known. It is a member of the Finnish Kennel Club. The Lapinporokoira features a dense coat which allows it to thrive in snowy environments. The tail is somewhat bushy, and the coat is smooth and shiny. The ideal Lapinporokoira will have a coat which is either black or brown with a few patches of white. While most of the body will be either black or brown, there should always be patches of white on the chest and legs. They also feature triangular shaped ears which pount forward. It is intelligent, and functions well with children. This is a rare breed that is not familiar to most people living outside Finland. It is highly alert and intelligent, and has a great deal of strength for its size. These dogs enjoy being in the company of people, and are one of the oldest breeds in the country. Health ProblemsThere are no known health problems which are specific to this breed. They may develop the same ailments which are found with most other dogs. There is very little information about their life expectancy, though they will generally not live longer than 15 years. ExerciseThese dogs were bred to work, and need extensive amounts of exercise. Owners will want to make sure they have pleny to space to live in. Because of their size, these dogs may not function well inside apartments or small homes. They enjoy being taken for extended walks, and owners will want to reserve time for them. Special Grooming NeedsThe Lapinporokoira has a smooth coat, and does not appear to need extensive amounts of grooming. There is little information available on their shedding patterns. Owners will want to brush their coats whenever it is necessary, and they should be bathed when it is needed.
