Japanese Spitz Pictures and Information

Japanese Spitz Description

The Japanese Spitz is a small breed of dog. They stand between 12 to 14 inches in height. They weigh between 11 to 13 pounds. They have small, pointed ears. Their eyes are oval and large. Their eyes are somewhat slanted. Their coats are very thick. They are always white in color. Their tails are curled over their back. Their legs have feathered fur. The Japanese Spitz resembles the American Eskimo a great deal. Their exact origin is unknown but it is believed the breed is related to the Siberian Samoyed. The breed was created in the 1800s. It was once considered the most popular dog in Japan, especially in the 1950s, but is not very popular in Asia today. They are becoming more and more popular in North American and Europe.

Temperament

The Japanese Spitz is very playful and high-spirited. They are obedient and bold. They are easy to train and very intelligent. They are very protective and often do realize their size. They are very distrustful of strangers but adore their families. They are great with children and other household pets. They are frequent barkers, and will alert the house to any strange activities or people. They act as a guard dog despite their size.

Health Problems

The Japanese Spitz is prone to eye disorders, these most often occur in their later years. Proper nutrition and frequent check ups at the vet make the eye disorders very preventable. They are a very healthy breed overall.

Exercise

Japanese Spitz require a moderate amount of exercise. They are a breed that is suitable for apartment living. They enjoy long walks and do well on a leash. They are very active indoors and love playing with toys. If the dog spends too much time running around at night while you are asleep then you may have to consider a crate to train the dog. Animals allowed to roam at night, especially those that are young, can get into trouble that may cause them harm.

Special Grooming Needs

Japanese Spitz requires some grooming. They should be brushed daily as their hair is very thick and long. The shed heavily and during these months should be brushed as often as possible. They are a very clean breed who tend to keep themselves that way, so bathe them only when necessary. Check regularly for fleas, as most of the animals in this breed are allergic to fleas and will have a bad reaction.
