Jack Russell Terrier Description

The Jack Russell Terrier is a small breed of dog. They stand between 10 to 12 inches in height and weigh between 14 to 18 pounds. They have short and compact bodies. They are athletic and strong despite their small stature. Their noses are black and their eyes are almond shaped. Their ears fold forward. Their tails are almost always docked. Their coats are either broken, smooth, or wire haired. Coat colors include white, reddish black, tan, or brown. All Jack Russell’s have some white markings.

The Jack Russell Terrier originated in England in the 19th Century. The breed is named after its creator. This breed was once used for hunting small game and digging prey out of their dens. They are most commonly used today as family pets and fair very well in agility competitions.

Country of Origin

United Kingdom

Temperament

Jack Russell Terriers are feisty to say the least. They are affectionate and loving. They can also be quite hyper active. They often do not realize their size and are known to be dog aggressive. They are willful breed and are sometimes not easy to train. They are good with children as long as the children do not tease them. They have been known to nip when agitated. They should never, under any circumstances, be trusted with smaller animals. Jack Russell’s often dig and can harm themselves in doing so. They can be destructive. These dogs are often bought by people based on their adorable appearance, but do not be fooled by their looks or their size, they are hunters and they are known to be quite a handful. This breed is not recommended for first time pet owners or even for those who have not owned terriers before.

Health Problems

Jack Russell terriers are prone to dislocation of the kneecaps. They are also known to have eye disease and go deaf in later years. They are also prone to a disease of the hip joints.

Exercise

Jack Russell’s require a great deal of exercise. They do best in households with small fenced yards. They are adaptable and can live in apartments but only if they are walked several times during the day. They should not be left alone for long periods of time as they can be very destructive when lonely or bored.

Special Grooming Needs

Jack Russell Terriers have coats that are easy to groom. Regular combing or brushing is required though. They should be bathed when necessary.
