Ibizan Hound Pictures and InformationIbizan Hound DescriptionThe Ibizan Hound is a medium sized breed of dog. They weigh between 45 to 55 pounds and stand between 22 to 29 inches in height. This breed is very similar to a deer in its body type. They are a lean breed, with athletic builds. They are very elegant in appearance. They have long, wedge shaped heads. Their eyes are amber in color and their ears are exceptionally large and triangular in shape. Their noses are pink in color. Three coat types exist: smooth-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired. The most common coat type in this breed is the smooth-haired. Coat colors come in white and red, white and tan, solid white or solid red. The exact origin of the Ibizan Hound is unknown. What is known is the breed became popular around 700-900 BC on the island of Ibiza. There were used to hunt small game such as rabbit. Also Known AsCa Eivissenc Country of OriginSpain TemperamentIbizan Hounds are a very quiet, well-mannered breed. They exceptionally clean. They are great with children. They are gentle and sensitive. They can be quite protective. These dogs do best in households with other pets when they are introduced to these pets as a puppy or the other pets are young when they are brought into the household. If raised with these animals, even non-canine ones, they do very well with them, accepting them into the “pack”. They are a very respectful and obedient breed. They do get easily bored though. They must never be boarded in a kennel as they will be quick to stop eating and tend to get very ill when away from what they are familiar with for long periods of time. Health ProblemsIbizan Hounds are a very healthy breed overall but are often allergic to some medications such as flea powder. Some are known to be prone to seizures. The breed also may be found to be prone to Axonal Dystrophy and nerve diseases. ExerciseIbizan Hounds require a great deal of exercise. They require either a fenced in large area to run free daily or three walks a day. They can live in apartments but only if they get plenty of exercise in the forms of walks and jogs. This breed can jump very high; making is easy for them to jump fences. Once an Ibizan Hound runs away it will not come back until it is ready to do so, which may be never. It is because of that that you must exercise extreme caution when letting your Ibizan outside to play. Special Grooming NeedsNone of the three coat types of the Ibizan Hound require much grooming. Occasional brushing will suffice with more frequent brushing during shedding months.
