Harrier Pictures and Information

Harrier Description

The Harrier is a medium sized breed of dog, that usually stand between 19-20 inches tall and weigh between 40-60 pounds. The Harrier is similar to the English Foxhound, but is a little smaller. Used in the hunt, it is a fast and hardy dog with a keen sense of smell and stamina to match.

Colors of the dog vary, but acceptable colors include  red and white, white and tan or lemon and white. Their back is sometimes all black.  Their ears are round and their eyes are either brown or hazel. Their wide nose is black. Their feet are small and rounded, similar to cats.

Although the origin of the Harrier breed has been under debate, it is fair to say that the breed is related to the English Foxhound. Although rare in the  United States, it has a long history as working pack dog in England and is used for hunting hares and foxes.

Also Known As

Temperament

The Harrier is playful but not hyper active. They are cheerful and sweet. They are very tolerant making them excellent pets for households with children. Harriers do very well with other dogs. They are not to be trusted with non-canine pets. They are a very active breed at times and very lazy at others.

Health Problems

Harriers are occasionally knonwn to suffer from hip dysplasia. Epilepsy has also been known to occur in Harriers and they should be monitored for any sign of seizure.

Exercise

Harriers require a good deal of exercise. If they do not receive a proper amount of exercise they will become restless and destructive. They are not recommended for apartment living. They do best when they live outdoors and spend nights indoors.

Special Grooming Needs

Harriers require very little grooming. Occasional brushing will suffice. This breed sheds an average amount and should be bathed and brushed frequently during shedding months.
