Great Dane Description

The Great Dane is a dog breed which is massive in size. They have powerful bodies with strong necks, and their front legs should be straight. The Great Dane will also have strong thighs and feet which are circular in shape with dark colored nails. The eyes of these dogs will be circular and dark, and their ears may be cropped, or they may be left in their natural position. The Great Dane has powerful teeth which should form a scissors bite. There are a number of colors which are acceptable for the coat, and these are black, blue, fawn, brindle, or mantle harlequin. The Great Dane is one of the largest dogs in the world, and can weigh up to 200 pounds and stand at a maximum height of 34 inches. The Great Dane is a very ancient breed that has existed since antiquity.

Temperament

Despite the size of these dogs, they are calm and peaceful. They are loving to those that care for them, and they enjoy being around children. The Great Dane needs to be surrounded by people that will give it attention. It does not bark a lot, but it can become aggressive if it is threatened. The Great Dane is reliable, and is a good watchdog. These dogs will need to be trained while they are puppies so they will be easier to handle once they become adults. Some Great Danes can be hard to train.

Health Problems

The Great Dane is a breed that does not have a long lifespan. It suffers from hip dysplasia, heart problems, bloat, and tumors. These dogs will typically have a lifespan that is less than 10 years, but some Great Danes have been known to live as long as 13 years.

Exercise

These dogs need lots of exercise, and owners will want to take them on extended walks. However, this should not be done until the dog is older than one year. Despite its size, the Great Dane can live in an apartment if it is given a sufficient amount of exercise. However, it will function best in a large yard.

Special Grooming Needs

Great Danes have short coats that are easy to care for. A comb or brush with strong bristles should be used to groom it. Great Danes are difficult to bathe, so owners will want to make sure they’re groomed on a daily basis. The nails should be consistently trimmed. The Great Dane will shed standard amounts of fur.
