Giant Schnauzer Pictures and Information

Giant Schnauzer Description

The Giant Schnauzer is a large dog that has prominent eyebrows and a beard. It has a wiry coat which is thick, and the under coat is soft. These dogs should have a height which is the same as their length, and this will give them a compact appearance. The Giant Schnauzer has a powerful neck that should merge smoothly with its shoulders. They should also have a large nose which is black in color. Their eyes should be oval in shape, and they should be dark brown. The teeth of the Giant Schnauzer should form a scissors bite. The dewclaws on the back legs must be taken off, and many owners choose to remove the front dewclaws as well. The coat should either be black, white, or a combination of the two colors.

Also Known As

Riesenschnauzer

Temperament

The Giant Schnauzer is a breed which is highly intelligent. They always enjoy being around their owners, and can be protective. Because of their size, they can be dominant dogs that should only be purchased by people who are experienced. They are simple to train, but owners will want to be consistent and give them lots of rewards. The Giant Schnauzer will behave in the same manner as other terrier breeds, but their size requires owners to train them properly. If they are not well trained, these dogs are not good for families.

Health Problems

This breed is susceptible to developing cancer. Toe cancer is a problem which is specific to the Giant Schnauzer, and it will kill them if it is not detected early. In addition to this, these dogs may also develop bloat. Epilepsy is well known among this breed, and the size of these dogs causes many of them to develop hip dysplasia. The Giant Schnauzer has a maximum life expectancy of 15 years.

Exercise

It is very important to make sure these dogs get excessive amounts of exercise. If they are not given exercise  at least two times a day, they can become highly active, and will be difficult to handle. These dogs enjoy large amounts of exercise, and they also enjoy running free in wide open areas.

Special Grooming Needs

The Giant Schnauzer has a coat that needs excessive amounts of care. It will become matted, and owners will want to make sure the coat is combed or brushed on a weekly basis. The coat of these dogs will also need to be trimmed. The Giant Schnauzer has no dog odor and will shed virtually no fur.
