German Longhaired Pointer Pictures and InformationGerman Longhaired Pointer DescriptionThe German Longhaired Pointer was bred in Germany as a gundog. But, the breed was rather slow, so in the 19th Century, they were bred with other pointers and setters to improve their speed and agility. While the dogs were originally either brown and white or black and white, it was eventually decided that a true German Longhaired Pointer was only brown and white, so the black and white strain of the breed became the Large Munsterlander breed. They are a medium sized dog, great for hunting and running due to their breeding, and are very fast and agile runners. Their coat is long, about 1-2 inches, and has a natural wave, making it a beautiful dog to see. Also Known AsDeutsch Langhaar TemperamentThe German Longhaired Pointer is a very sweet and loving breed. They are very smart dogs as well, making them great pets. But, they do experience terrible separation anxiety if left alone too long, so it is not a good idea to keep them locked up or left alone for too long. They do make great pets for families because they are energetic, loyal, loving, and smart, as well as great with children. Health ProblemsBecause they are not a widely popular dog, they do not have a lot of the genetic disorders that many breeds do because of inbreeding. They can be prone to ear infections, but as long as their ears are kept clean and dry, this is usually not a problem. You can also use a bit of mineral oil in their ears on a regular basis to ensure that their ears stay healthy. An animal that shakes its head constantly is most likely telling you its ears have a problem. ExerciseThe German Longhaired Pointer is a dog that needs a lot of exercise every day, so it is not suitable for apartment life. They love to run and swim and play, so they need plenty of room exercise every day. They are very easy to train, so this is another great way to get them the exercise that they need. Special Grooming NeedsA German Longhaired Pointer does need a regular grooming session due to its longer coat to keep it clean, shiny, and untangled. It is best to take the animal to a professional for grooming. They can be quite hard to handle if they become scared or do not like something.
