Fila Brasileiro Pictures and Information

Fila Brasileiro Description

The Fila Brasileiro is better known as the Brazilian Mastiff. It is a massive sized breed of dog. It stands between 22 to 29 inches in height and weighs between 90 to 110 pounds. The Brazilian Mastiff has a very large head and a long muzzle. They are similar to a Mastiff in appearance. They have thick skin, that wrinkles and overlaps throughout their bodies.

Their coats are short and smooth. Their coats come in variety of colors. The most common colors are fawn, black, and brindle. Some have white markings on their feet, chest, and the tips of their tails. Fila Brasileiro date back to the 15th century. They were created from mixing English Mastiffs, Bloodhounds, Bulldogs, and Rafeiros. They were bred for tracking. They have the ability to track and control livestock and large game. They do not kill what they hunt; simply trap it until the hunter arrives. It is not a popular breed today and is actually banned in many countries.

Temperament

Brazilian Mastiffs are very protective breed. It is because of this that they are banned in some parts of the country. They are not naturally aggressive and only act as so when they are protecting their families. They are far more tolerant than most breeds. Their size often frightens people but they are good natured, loving, affectionate breed. They do not warm up to strangers easily. They are wonderful with kids of all ages. They are very careful to be gentle with small children. They usually get along well with other pets, but due to their dominant nature it is best that they are not around non-altered male dogs.

Unfortunately it is hard to teach a Brazilian Mastiff to trust strangers. Even at a very young age a dog of this breed will be weary and naturally protective of its owners around strangers. They have been known to attack strangers, even when unprovoked.

Health Problems

Filas are prone to most of the ailments that affect large breeds. Hip dysplasia is very common. This breed is also prone to bloating and thus should be fed several small meals a day instead of one large one.

Exercise

Filas are active and they must have room to run. They need a fenced in yard to be happy. They should never be let run free. They love long walks but beware in areas with lots of people. They can often be quite lazy as well, and enjoy sleeping indoors with their families.

Special Grooming Needs

Filas do not require a great deal of grooming. They should be brushed and bathed when necessary. They shed an average amount.
