Field Spaniel Pictures and Information

Field Spaniel Description

The Field Spaniel is a medium sized breed of dog. They stand, on average, 18 inches in height. They weigh between 35 and 40 pounds. They are similar in appearance to the English Cocker Spaniel, though they are heavier and longer. They have silky coats that are usually solid in color. Black or liver are the most common colors for a Field Spaniels coat. Their legs, chests, ears and tails are feathered a great deal. Their hair is never curly. Their eyes are almond in shape and either hazel or chestnut brown. Their tails are almost always docked at birth. The Field Spaniel is descended though careful breeding of the English Cocker Spaniel. The Field Spaniel’s country of origin is England.

The breed was almost ruined by poor selection practices during the last 1800’s, when breeders greatly exaggerated the dog’s length and weight. By the 1920’s however, breeders had returned to moderation, In spite of this the breed has remained rare to this day. The Field Spaniel is a fine bird dog, with a very mild disposition.

Though he makes a wonderful family companion, the Field Spaniel is very rare in the United States due to the great popularity of the Cocker and Springer Spaniels. Some of the Field Spaniel’s talents are tracking, hunting, retrieving and watchdogging.

Temperament

The Field Spaniel is considered to have the best temperament out of all of the Spaniels. They are mild mannered, sweet, and affectionate. They are far more independent than other Spaniel breeds. They are very docile and a great dog for households with children of all ages. They can be a timid breed, so it is important to socialize them while they are young. They can be stubborn at times, which might make obedience training slightly difficult. Field Spaniels play well with other dogs of a calm nature. They do not engage in rough play and can become frightened if another dog is playing too roughly.

Health Problems

Field Spaniels are prone to hip dysplasia. They are also commonly afflicted with ear infections. Daily cleaning can help to avoid these problems with the ears.

Exercise

Field Spaniels require a good deal of exercise. They are best suited for households with large yards. They are not recommended for apartment living. They must have plenty of room the run around. They will chase scents that appeal to them so it is important that your yard has a suitable fence. This breed does not enjoy hot weather so during hot seasons they may require less exercise outdoors and more of it indoors.

Special Grooming Needs

Field Spaniels require a moderate amount of grooming. It is best if they are brushed or combed once a week. Their ears should be cleaned very frequently to help ward off infections. Their coat may need occasional trimming.
