Feist Pictures and Information

Feist Description

The Feist is small sized breed of dog. There are three main types of the breed today. The most common, though it is still rare, is the Mountain Feist. The Mountain Feist stands between 10 to 22 inches in height. They weigh 10 to 30 pounds. The coat of the Mountain Feist is short and smooth. Coat colors include tricolor with spots, red and white, red, black, black and tan, blue and white, red brindle, and white. Their head has a medium length muzzle, with a slightly rounded skull. The eyes are small and dark in color. The ears are set well on side of head, wedge shaped, and held erect or semi-erect. Their muzzle is medium length and tapering to a point. The nose is black and self-colored according to coat. Their bite is scissor or level. The neck is medium length and strong. Their chest is fairly deep and well ribbed. Their back is straight and strong. Forelegs are straight and strong. Hind legs are muscular, with hocks slightly bent. Their feet are small and compact, with arched toes and thick pads. The tail is set high and carried erect.

The Feist exact origin is unknown and they are a rare breed, but they can be traced back to the rat terrier. Other varieties of the Feist breed include the Bench-legged Feist, the Pencil-tail Feist, and the Kemmer Feist. All these breeds are used for hunting small game such as birds, rabbits, and squirrels.

Temperament

The Feist breed has a similar temperament to that of a Rat Terrier. They are a lovable and high-spirited breed. They do make good companions but are only truly happy when they are used for hunting as well. They can be a hyper active breed. They are good with children but can sometimes play to rough for smaller children. They are not good around smaller pets and will try to kill them. They are usually okay with other dogs.

Health Problems

There are no known problems associated with the Feist breed. They are a small breed, but very tough. They are not fragile and their bones do not break easily.

Exercise

Dogs of the Feist breed require a great deal of exercise. They must have frequent and long sessions of play. They are best suited for areas that they can run free. They will hunt any small animals they come across, and this most be taken into consideration when you are choosing an area for them to run and play. It is best if they are used specifically for hunting.

Special Grooming Needs

A Feist does not require much grooming. Occasional brushing may be required. They are a breed that enjoys digging and burying themselves in the dirt so the occasional bath may prove necessary.
