English Coonhound Pictures and Information

English Coonhound Description

The English Coonhound is a medium to large sized breed of dog. They stand between 21 to 27 inches in height and they weigh between 40 to 65 pounds. They are a shorter breed, but very strong and muscular. The English Coonhounds are similar to other hound breeds in the areas that they have the bark of a hound, which is deep and loud. Their coats are harsh, but shiny, and include such colors as: blue and white ticked, red and white ticked, tri-colored with ticking, red and white, and white and black. Their tails are somewhat long and high set.

English Coonhounds can be traced back to the English Foxhound breed. Their exact date of origin is unknown but they were first registered by the UKC in 1905. They were originally used for fox hunting. They are still used today by hunters in The United States and Europe for hunting all types of smaller game, such as foxes, rabbits, squirrels, and rodents.

Also Known As

Redtick Coonhound

Temperament

English Coonhounds are a very intelligent breed so training does not take long, even when it is extensive training. They are very energetic and active and they are extremely fast runners. They make wonderful companion dogs as well as hunting dogs since they are pleasant and loyal to almost all humans they come into contact with. They love children and are very considerate with them so they make a great family pet for any home with children. Due to their nature, they love to run and play, which can be a benefit to both the dog and the children in the house. They can be a bit aggressive towards other dogs; this is especially prevalent in the males.

Health Problems

There are no known health problems directly associated with this breed. They are overall a very healthy breed. When they become afflicted with a common cold they can become depressed and listless as their sense of smell is not in proper working order.

Exercise

English Coonhounds are a very active breed. They do best when they have large areas to run free in. They are not recommended for apartment life. The breed needs extensive daily running. If they are confined to indoors for long periods of time they can become destructive.

Special Grooming Needs

The short, hard coat is easy to care for. Comb and brush with a firm bristled brush, and shampoo only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder.
