This breed has existed at least since the 16th century. However, the breed was not recognized until 1943. It is still rare, though it has been featured in a number of Dutch paintings. It is believed that these dogs were brought to the Netherlands from either Spain or France. These dogs were bred to move about in marshes, and they are expert retrievers. Their disposition is similar to that of a spaniel. They are friendly and cheerful with those that care for them, and they are great dogs for the family. While they will showcase large amounts of energy when hunting, they are calm when they are around their families. These dogs have excellent dispositions, and they are also great with children. Health ProblemsThere are no known health problems that have been observed in the Drentse Patrijshond. They are a healthy and strong breed of dog, and will have a maximum life expectancy of 13 years. ExerciseThe Drentse Patrijshond is a hunting dog, and like all hunting dog, they need large amounts of exercise. They should not be purchased by families who don’t have the time to give them the exercise they need. The Drentse Patrijshond should be taken for walks daily, and they are excellent for those who enjoy hiking. They may not behave well in apartments, and owners will want to give them a yard where they can run around and play. Special Grooming NeedsThe Drentse Patrijshond has an extensive coat that owners will want to pay attention to. It should be combed or brushed on a consistent basis, and any tangles or mats that are present should be removed. These dogs should only be bathed when it is necessary.
