Dogue de Bordeaux Description

The Dogue de Bordeaux is a breed which is a member of the Mastiff family. It is a short dog which has a powerful build, and it also has a massive head which is wrinkled and wide. The head plays an important role in the appearance of this breed. The highest quality dogs will have a head that has a circumference of about 30 inches. The jaws should be powerful, and they will need to be undershot as well. The mask of the dog should either be red or black in color. The upper lips should cover the lower jaw, and these dogs will have prominent nostrils. These dogs will have straight tails which should be tapered. The short coat should either be fawn, black, or mahogany in color.

The exact origin of this breed is debated. What is certain is that it is a very old breed. It has been used in wars, and has also been used to guard flocks.

Also Known As

Bordeaux Bulldog
French Mastiff

Temperament

While the Dogue de Bordeaux was a vicious dog, this behavior has been bred out of it over time. The modern dogs are calm and patient, though they may threaten those they are not familiar with. The Dogue de Bordeaux is designed to be a guard dog, and it is good at this. It can be aggressive with other dogs, but if it socialized while it is a puppy, and can behave well with other pets. This dog is prone to drooling, but it is gentle with children. Because of its size, it is not recommended for people who are not experienced with handling large dogs.

Health Problems

These dogs are difficult to breed, and are expensive to purchase. Because of the size of their heads, cesarean sections will often have to be performed in order for a mother to give birth. Despite this, these dogs don’t suffer from a large number of health conditions. The Dogue de Bordeaux has a maximum life expectancy of 12 years.

Exercise

These dogs need extensive amounts of exercise. Owners will want to consistently take them on long walks, and they should only be allowed to run off the leash if they are in a secure area. While these dogs can function in an apartment, they don’t need to have their own yard.

Special Grooming Needs

The Dogue de Bordeaux has a smooth coat which is short and easy to groom. Because of this, they don’t need extensive amounts of grooming. They will shed standard amounts of fur.
