Deutscher Wachtelhund Description

The Deutscher Wachtelhund is a medium sized breed of dog. They stand between 18 to 21 inches in height and weigh between 44 and 66 pounds. They are a very strong and muscular dog. They have long coats that are usually quite wavy. Their coats are most commonly found in the colors gray and brown. Their coats can appear in any variation of black, brown, gray, and white. The breed, Deutscher Wachtelhund originates from Germany.

They are known as “gun dogs” and are used as such today. They were once known as German Spaniels in the United States but in Germany they are not considered to be a Spaniel breed. In Germany they are classified as Stoberhounds.

Also Known As

German Spaniel

Temperament

Deutscher Wachtelhunds are a very vibrant and friendly breed. They are highly intelligent. They are aggressive when hunting but do not seem to be with other dogs or children. They have amazing hunting capabilities and an extremely keen sense of smell. They are bred to hunt and are not really a suitable pet if they are not given hunting duties. They may become restless if they do not get the chance to hunt or aide in hunting.

Health Problems

Deutscher Wachtelhunds are a very healthy breed. German breeders go to great lengths to keep unhealthy dogs of this breed out of the mix. In Germany you must first get permission to breed your Deutscher Wachtelhunds. Each one of the Wachtelhunds must pass many tests before they are allowed to be bred. One problem that may be prevalent in a Deutscher Wachtelhund is skin allergies.

Exercise

Deutscher Wachtelhunds require a great amount of exercise. They must have a large area where they can run free. They do well on a leash but must be allowed off it from time to time. They are not well-suited for living strictly outdoors, as they prefer being around their families. It is important that when walking your Deutscher Wachtelhund you have a very strong leash, as they are a strong breed and may break their leash to run after a cat or other small animal. The breed also enjoys water and would happiest if given the opportunity to swim on occasion.

Special Grooming Needs

Deutscher Wachtelhunds require a moderate amount of grooming. It is best to brush their coats frequently. Their hair should be trimmed on occasion to avoid matting. It is important to clean their ears frequently to ward off infections.
