This is a very new breed and there are changes in the appearance of these dogs each time they are bred. Country of OriginUnited States TemperamentDakota Shepherds are an extremely smart breed. This breed does not seem to possess the aggression that many other Shepherd breeds possess. They are a fiercely loyal breed that forms strong, ever lasting bonds with their owners. The Dakota Shepherd is very easy to train and do quite well in agility. This breed is excellent with children, and always very gentle with them. They are a laid-back breed that is playful but almost never hyper. This breed is not known to bark often, but they will when provoked, excited, or on guard. Health ProblemsThere is no known health problems associated with the Dakota Shepherd yet. This breed is still very new and has not had to time to be studied thoroughly regarding health issues. ExerciseDakota Shepherds require a moderate amount of exercise. They are not a hyper dog that demands hours of play, so long, slow walks will suffice. They are a very intelligent breed, though, and do seem to enjoy engaging in games that require them to think. Training is a breeze with this smart breed, and they love to learn new tricks and show off for their owners.Special Grooming NeedsThere is little grooming necessary for a Dakota Shepherd. They do not require professional grooming in the form of hair cuts or shave downs. It may be necessary to bathe them on occasion. They do shed somewhat heavily in hot temperatures and during this time may require more brushing or combing to aide in the shedding process. So, it is best to keep them cool and dry, especially when the summer temperatures are hottest.
