Chow Chow Description

The Chow Chow is one of the most well known breeds to originate in China. It has a tongue which is black and blue in color, and the hind legs are nearly straight. The Chow Chow has a thick coat that may be rough or smooth. The acceptable coat colors for this breed are black, red, cinnamon, blue, and cream. White may be seen as well, but this is not common. The coat of this dog should never have more than one color. The ears are circular and small, and the chest is wide. The Chow Chow has a tail which is thick and furry, and it should be carried over the dog’s back.

The Chow Chow is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. It originated in China, and it was used to hunt, guard, and pull carts. The flesh of these dogs is desirable in China, and they are still currently eaten. They were first brought to Europe during the 19th century.

Temperament

While the Chow Chow can be a well behaved breed, it is known for being protective of those that care for it. They can be exceptionally stubborn, and are independent dogs. Because of this, the Chow Chow is not the ideal family dog. It is better for one person that is living alone. This dog can even be reserved with those that care for it. The Chow Chow can be aggressive if it feels threatened by a stranger. These dogs can be dominant, and they need an owner who is a natural leader. These dogs are not quick to obey commands that are given to them by their owners.

Health Problems

Hip dysplasia is a problem that is commonly seen with these dogs. In addition to this, they may also suffer from eye problems as well. Despite these conditions, the Chow Chow is a breed which is generally healthy. The have a maximum life expectancy of about 15 years.

Exercise

Chow Chows can become lazy if they are not given sufficient amounts of exercise. Owners will want to take them on walks, and they should be allowed to run free in a safe area. These dogs can function well in apartments, and if owners want to put them outside, a small yard is good enough. They don’t tolerate heat very well, so owners will want to make sure they’re protected in warm weather.

Special Grooming Needs

The Chow Chow has an extensive coat that will need to be consistently brushed. They will shed large amounts of fur, and owners will need to use more care during this time.
