Temperament

The Central Asian Ovtcharka is a brave dog that was bred to protect cattle. These dogs are strong and will not back away from any challenger. While they are loving with their families, they should be monitored around children. They will attempt to dominate any dogs they encounter, and they do not trust people that are unfamiliar to them. The Central Asian Ovtcharka is known for barking during the night, and can be a source of annoyance to neighbors. It is crucial for owners to make sure these dogs are properly trained and socialized. The Central Asian Ovtcharka should not be purchased by owners who don’t know how to handle them.

Health Problems

Because of their size, these dogs may develop problems with their elbows or hips. Before these dogs are purchased, it is important to screen them for genetic problems. The Central Asian Ovtcharka will have a maximum life expectancy of 14 years.

Exercise

These dogs are active, and should be purchased by a person that is active as well. They will run with you as you jog, and they make great hiking partners. While these dogs may sometimes act lazy, they are quick to move if they notice a potential intruder. These dogs must be placed in a sizeable yard, and are not good for people who live in apartments. If these dogs are kept in small places, they may become bored, and this can cause them to become problematic.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs do not need extensive amounts of grooming. They were not bred to be show dogs, and owners will simply need to make sure the coat is brushed to take away any dead hair that may be present. The Central Asian Ovtcharka does not shed a large amount of fur.
