Catalan Sheepdog Description

The Catalan Sheepdog has an extensive coat that covers most of its body. Even the eyes will be covered, and the coat should either be sable, fawn, or grey. The texture of the coat should be wavy. The Catalan Sheepdog is moderate in size, and should weigh no more than 60 pounds, and it should stand at a maximum height of 20 inches. It should be noted that there is a short haired variation of these dogs, but they are nearly extinct.

Temperament

The Catalan Sheepdog is extremely intelligent. They are so smart that they are known for protecting sheep without the assistance of their master. They have a strong amount of bravery and loyalty, and they are independent as well. This is a breed which is excellent for the family. The Catalan Sheepdog shows an intense amount of affection to its master, and is good with children as well. Overall, this is a dog that makes a great companion.

Health Problems

Due to their size, the Catalan Sheepdog may be susceptible to developing hip dysplasia. Other than this, they are a healthy breed, and will have a maximum life expectancy of 14 years.

Exercise

It is important for owners to make sure these dogs are given all the exercise they need. They are not good for those who live in apartments, and they will at least need to have a moderate sized yard. If the Catalan Sheepdog is placed in a large enough yard, it may be able to exercise itself without the help of its owner. However, they will enjoy being taken on long walks whenever you have the chance. Because of their extensive coats, owners will want to make sure they don’t overheat during the summer months. The Catalan Sheepdog has large amounts of endurance and strength.

Special Grooming Needs

The Catalan Sheepdog has a long coat that will need large amounts of grooming. It is important for owners to make sure mats or tangles are removed, and a firm brush or comb should be used on a daily basis. Not much is known about the shedding patterns of these dogs, and they should only be given a bath when they need it.
